Impact Officer Sunder Mahendra explores what part engagement has played in her research.<\/p>\n<p>Can states respond to terrorist non-violently? Dr Harmonie Toros\u2019s research brought this question into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization\u2019s (NATO) training of military and defence officials in counter-terrorism by directly changing NATO\u2019s curriculum to include non-violent responses. It introduced new approaches and frameworks for analysing terrorism and counter-terrorism now adopted within NATO learning centres.<\/p>\n<p>Dr\u202fHarmonie Toros,\u00a0Reader in International Conflict Analysis at Kent\u2019s School of Politics and International Relations\u00a0carried out extensive field research in Europe, Middle East,\u00a0South East\u00a0Asia and Africa researching state and non-state armed groups as well as investigating the human experience of war.\u00a0Her research lies at the crossroad between conflict resolution and terrorism studies.\u00a0Toros\u2019 approach involves\u00a0rare primary research, including interviews and participant observation with members of non-state armed groups, senior government and military officials in several countries that resulted in her seminal work developing a critical theory-based approach to terrorism and examining the transformation of conflicts marked by terrorist violence.\u00a0Her\u00a0research has\u00a0informed\u00a0understandings\u00a0of\u00a0and\u00a0responses to\u00a0terrorism\u00a0of\u00a0political and defence establishments across the\u00a0world, and\u00a0is an outstanding example of topical research subject and sustained stakeholder engagement leading to impacts on policy and practice.\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Toros\u2019 research\u00a0outputs have consistently been policy accessible, enabling defence, political affairs officials of states and international organisations to easily\u00a0see the relevance of the research to their policy needs.\u00a0Her research\u00a0combined with her experience working as a\u00a0reporter and editor for major international news agencies\u00a0has shaped her approach towards engaging with stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Toros&#8217;\u00a0research\u00a0publications,\u00a0several\u00a0presentations\u00a0and\u00a0talks\u00a0based on\u00a0her\u00a0research,\u00a0at varied fora\u00a0and proactive engagement with multiple stakeholders\u00a0has\u00a0prompted\u00a0officials from governments, security establishments from several countries to\u00a0invite her\u00a0for collaborative work, training programmes and for advisory roles.\u00a0\u00a0These collaborations have led to further co-produced research\u00a0outputs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Harmonie Toros is a Reader in International Conflict Analysis at Kent\u2019s School of Politics and International Relations.
