But what causes this behaviour \u2013 known as \u2018phubbing\u2019 \u2013 and how did it come to be regarded as normal?<\/p>\n<p>Research from psychologists at the University suggests people\u2019s internet addiction is leading them increasingly to \u2018phub\u2019 \u2013 and experience being \u2018phubbed\u2019 \u2013 in social situations. This, in turn, leads them to view this phubbing behaviour as normal.<\/p>\n<p>The research, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/chotpitayasunondhy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Varoth Chotpitayasunondh<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/douglask\/\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Karen Douglas<\/a> from the University\u2019s School of Psychology, identified a number of factors that were linked to smartphone addiction.
