{"id":596,"date":"2015-08-27T09:39:32","date_gmt":"2015-08-27T08:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/?p=596"},"modified":"2016-05-16T14:58:25","modified_gmt":"2016-05-16T13:58:25","slug":"awareness-of-mortality-can-be-bad-for-our-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/2015\/08\/27\/awareness-of-mortality-can-be-bad-for-our-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Awareness of mortality can be bad for our health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People with low self-esteem use a variety of escape mechanisms to avoid thinking about their own mortality, new Kent research reveals.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/wismana\/\">Dr Arnaud Wisman<\/a>, of the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/\">School of Psychology<\/a>, found evidence in five studies that people with low self-esteem respond to reminders of their own mortality by directing their focus away from the \u2018self\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The research found an empirical and causal link between people with low self-esteem having unconscious concerns about their own mortality and then employing a variety of ways to escape from self-awareness.
