I previously did my undergrad here in Psychology with Clinical Psychology but also did a placement year where I worked as a Student Psychologist in a Grammar School in Kent.

Outside of my studies I work for the ambulance service where I answer 999 calls for the entire southeast of England, and I volunteer for a first-aid charity in Maidstone on Saturday nights.

Outside of work and uni, I enjoy going out for lunch or coffee in my free time. I also really enjoy walking and the country side – and yes, I have a national trust membership!

When you first started your Bachelor’s degree here, how were you feeling about going to university for the first time?

Going to university was a big step for me – it was a unique journey to most, and not just because it was the middle of covid! I decided to come to university about one week after getting my a-level results. Before this, I hadn’t even considered going to uni. So it was a big decision and quite a scary one too.

How did you find the whole Clearing process?

When applying to uni I applied via clearing. I found this very stressful at first as I was worried about whether I’d get a space or how this process would look. It was a very supported process and the staff that you speak to are really nice and enthusiastic! I found the process well-supported and not too challenging to get through. It was a huge relief when I finally got into Kent!

Did you join any societies, and did they help calm any anxieties?

At university I have been part of a few societies, the most notable being the Psychology Society which is our academic society for everything psychology (including some amazing murder mystery nights!). I also joined the Mindfulness Society which was really useful and sometimes exactly what I needed during a stressful week of deadlines.

What are your hopes and dreams for your future/career? (scary question haha)

I want to be a Clinical Psychologist, hopefully! At least that’s the long-term goal. I am also very interested in research and hope to do a PhD here at Kent before then. Ideally though, I just want to do something that helps a lot of people! So fingers crossed we get there!

Join Reiss Cordrey, a dedicated Clinical Psychology student here Kent, as he shares his experiences in academia and beyond.
