{"id":2251,"date":"2020-03-23T14:35:46","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T14:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/?p=2251"},"modified":"2020-03-23T14:35:46","modified_gmt":"2020-03-23T14:35:46","slug":"new-report-highlights-negative-attitudes-to-ageing-and-older-people-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/2020\/03\/23\/new-report-highlights-negative-attitudes-to-ageing-and-older-people-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"New report highlights negative attitudes to ageing and older people in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a report commissioned by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ageing-better.org.uk\/\">Centre for Ageing Better<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/276\/swift-hannah\">Dr Hannah J Swift<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/2310\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/2310\/steeden-ben\">Ben Steeden<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\">School of Psychology<\/a>\u00a0reviewed that\u00a0<strong>negative stereotypes are widespread<\/strong>\u00a0in the workplace, in health and social care and in the media. Older workers are cited as being seen as having\u00a0<strong>lower levels of performance<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>less ability to learn<\/strong>, and being\u00a0<strong>more costly than younger workers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Swift said: \u2018Our review of evidence reveals the\u00a0<strong>conflicting representations of age and older adults<\/strong>\u00a0in the UK, across a number of important societal contexts. It recognises that some stereotypes of ageing have a \u2018kernel of truth\u2019 and reflect age-related changes, but highlights the\u00a0<strong>danger of stereotypes<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>over exaggerate age differences<\/strong>, and dismiss the huge variation between people of the same age.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Doddery but dear?
