{"id":221,"date":"2014-10-21T12:53:59","date_gmt":"2014-10-21T12:53:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/?p=221"},"modified":"2015-04-22T10:42:07","modified_gmt":"2015-04-22T09:42:07","slug":"music-helps-neuro-rehabilitation-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/2014\/10\/21\/music-helps-neuro-rehabilitation-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"Music helps neuro-rehabilitation patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reader in Psychology <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/wilkinsond\/\">Dr David Wilkinson<\/a> is working with hospital clinicians and ward staff on a project to find a new way of helping patients recover from brain damage by using live music performance.<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration, between academics, clinicians and musicians, was recognised with the runner-up prize in the category for Outstanding Service Innovation at this year&#8217;s East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Award Night.<\/p>\n<p>The innovative project took place on the Harvey Neuro-Rehabilitation Ward at the Kent &amp; Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury. The patients, whose conditions include acquired brain injury, low awareness state, tumour and MS, attended twice-weekly interactive live music concerts over a six-week period, performed by professional musicians.
