{"id":1814,"date":"2019-05-21T12:31:35","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T11:31:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/?p=1814"},"modified":"2019-06-18T11:22:20","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T10:22:20","slug":"dr-markus-bindemann-wins-major-grants-for-face-recognition-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/2019\/05\/21\/dr-markus-bindemann-wins-major-grants-for-face-recognition-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Markus Bindemann wins major grants for face recognition research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/bindemannm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Markus Bindemann<\/a>, Reader in Psychology,\u00a0has been awarded two grants totalling over \u00a3750,000 for projects to investigate face detection and identification.<\/p>\n<p>The first project, entitled\u00a0\u2018Face identification within realistic contexts\u2019, will be funded by an <a href=\"https:\/\/esrc.ukri.org\/\">Economic and Social Research Council<\/a> grant worth \u00a3505,000.<\/p>\n<p>Supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.met.police.uk\/\">MET police<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/border-force\">UK Border Force<\/a>, the project involves <strong>use of virtual reality as a tool to help us understand how the external environment and social interaction affect face matching<\/strong>.\u00a0 The research will have <strong>significant implications for theories of face identification and for the practice of real-world face matching (e.g., in airports and at\u00a0borders)<\/strong>, as well as providing important new technology for researchers in the field.<\/p>\n<p>A further grant of\u00a0\u00a3249,000 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leverhulme.ac.uk\/\">Leverhulme Trust<\/a>\u00a0will fund a three-year project entitled\u00a0\u2018Face Detection by Humans\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the project is to <strong>find a human face detection &#8216;signature&#8217;<\/strong>. In collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/psychology\/staff\/academicstaff\/rob-jenkins\/\">Dr Rob Jenkins<\/a>, his co-investigator at the University of York, Markus will <strong>test the novel hypothesis that detection occurs through use of a computational average \u2013 a statistical summary of all faces one has encountered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Markus Bindemann of the University\u2019s School of Psychology said: &#8216;We are delighted to conduct this important research at Kent, which will enhance our theoretical understanding of the cognitive processes underlying face detection and person identification, and also inform applied settings&#8217;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Markus Bindemann, Reader in Psychology,\u00a0has been awarded two grants totalling over \u00a3750,000 for projects to investigate face detection and identification.
