{"id":1748,"date":"2019-03-14T13:15:59","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T13:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/?p=1748"},"modified":"2020-05-19T11:12:19","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T10:12:19","slug":"1748","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/2019\/03\/14\/1748\/","title":{"rendered":"Conspiracy theories fuel prejudice towards minority groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>New research involving University psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/douglask\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Karen Douglas<\/a> shows that exposure to conspiracy theories can intensify prejudice towards minority groups.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The research, published on 14 March in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bps.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Psychological Society\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/20448295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Journal of Psychology<\/a>, was\u00a0carried out by chartered BPS member Dr Daniel Jolley from Staffordshire University and Dr Rose Meleady from the University of East Anglia as well as Professor Douglas,\u00a0from Kent\u2019s\u00a0School of Psychology.<\/p>\n<p>It involved\u00a0three studies carried out to examine the effect of exposure to conspiracy theories on people\u2019s attitudes towards minority groups.<\/p>\n<p>In the first study,\u00a0participants were exposed to one of three stories; a conspiracy story about immigrants\u2019 involvement in terrorist organisations and their plots to attack Britain from within,\u00a0an anti-conspiracy narrative or a neutral narrative.<\/p>\n<p>When tested afterwards,\u00a0participants who had been exposed to the conspiracy story held more conspiracy beliefs and expressed more prejudice towards immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full news story on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/society\/21581\/conspiracy-theories-fuel-prejudice-towards-minority-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kent News Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The research was entitled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/bjop.12385\"><em>Exposure to intergroup conspiracy theories promotes prejudice which spreads across groups.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New research involving University psychologist Professor Karen Douglas shows that exposure to conspiracy theories can intensify prejudice towards minority groups.
