The research, which was\u00a0co-led by psychologists at the University, suggests this is probably because\u00a0narcissists tend to feel entitled and superior to others, which results in lower tolerance of diverse political opinions.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast,\u00a0people who take a positive, non-defensive self-view and trust others are more likely to show support for democracy, the research found.<\/p>\n<p>The study, the findings of which are published as\u00a0<em>My way or the highway: high narcissism and low self-esteem predict decreased support for democracy<\/em>, consisted of two parts that\u00a0analysed the relationship between different types of self-evaluation \u2013 narcissism and self-esteem \u2013 and support for democracy in the US and Poland.<\/p>\n<p>The team, led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/cichockaa\/\">Dr Aleksandra Cichocka<\/a>, of Kent\u2019s\u00a0School of Psychology, and Dr Marta Marchlewska, of the Polish Academy of Sciences,\u00a0set out to understand the psychological mechanisms driving support for democracy.\u00a0They built on previous research which demonstrated that basic personality traits can predict broader opinions about the organisation of the social world.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full news story at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/society\/20424\/narcissists-less-likely-to-support-democracy-research-from-psychologists-shows\">Kent News Centre<\/a>.
