{"id":133,"date":"2013-01-18T12:19:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-18T12:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/?p=133"},"modified":"2015-04-22T11:08:54","modified_gmt":"2015-04-22T10:08:54","slug":"exposure-to-conspiracy-theories-can-be-detrimental-for-political-engagement-and-environmental-campaigns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/2013\/01\/18\/exposure-to-conspiracy-theories-can-be-detrimental-for-political-engagement-and-environmental-campaigns\/","title":{"rendered":"Exposure to conspiracy theories can be detrimental for political engagement and environmental campaigns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research published (14 January) in the\u00a0British Journal of Psychology\u00a0has revealed that exposure to conspiracy theories decreases people&#8217;s intentions to engage in politics and to reduce their carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>The research, which was conducted by the University of Kent&#8217;s Daniel Jolley and Dr Karen Douglas, both experts on the\u00a0psychology\u00a0of conspiracy theories, involved two studies.<\/p>\n<p>In the first study, participants were exposed to a range of conspiracy theories concerning government involvement in significant events such as the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Results revealed that exposure to information supporting conspiracy theories reduced participants&#8217; intentions to engage in politics, relative to participants who were given information refuting conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n<p>In the second study, participants were exposed to conspiracy theories concerning the issue of climate change.
