Mental Health Awareness Week is taking place from May 10-16. As this year’s theme is nature we’re going to be sharing one simple way for you to reconnect with the natural world. Head over to our Instagram @unikentpsychology each day to see the ideas!
Nature has played a vital role in the lives of many throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the Mental Health Foundation, going for walks outside was one of our top coping strategies and 45% of the public reported that being in green spaces had been vital for our mental health. It, therefore, seems fitting that Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) focuses on it as its theme this year.
Dr Emma Travers-Hill recommends ‘pocketing’ memories of nature when you are immersed in it, to think about later.
“Nature often makes us pause and appreciate the here and now”
She continued, next time you are immersed in nature (for example, looking at a flower or standing on a beach) do this simple thing – notice what you can see, hear, smell, touch and taste. Pocket this memory in your mind. You can then easily bring it out whenever you need it, such as when you feel anxious, are struggling to sleep or just need a pick me up.’
