{"id":5236,"date":"2022-10-15T14:59:31","date_gmt":"2022-10-15T14:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/?p=5236"},"modified":"2022-10-27T08:37:54","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T08:37:54","slug":"a-student-inside-the-conservative-party-conference-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/2022\/10\/15\/a-student-inside-the-conservative-party-conference-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"A student inside the Conservative Party Conference 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Third Year Politics Student, and Chair of the Kent University Conservative Association, Eamon O&#8217;Reilly, attended the Conservative Party Conference this year in Birmingham prioritising the fringe events, rather than the speeches familiar with seeing in the press coverage. <\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I attended the Conservative Party conference in September this year, which was held at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham, attending as a visitor. Anyone who has been a member for over six months is eligible to attend and buy a ticket.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/chris-and-eamon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-5285\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/chris-and-eamon.jpg\" alt=\"chris and eamon\" width=\"518\" height=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am a Politics student in my final year of study, and the Chair of the Conservative Association here at the University of Kent, so this was a great opportunity for me, and one I enjoyed very much. The conference enabled me to hear various Conservative figures and affiliated organisations speak on a range of key issues facing the party and our country today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/Liz-Truss-Conservative-Party-Conf-Crop-.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-5301\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/Liz-Truss-Conservative-Party-Conf-Crop-.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"513\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the Gibraltar Reception, Fabian Picardo spoke and a few booed at the mention of Liz Truss\u2019 name. Tom <span class=\"s2\">T<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ugendhat<\/span> spoke at the Drink Tank, Bright Blue and Budweiser&#8217;s networking event.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/Untitled-design-3-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5289\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/Untitled-design-3-1.png\" alt=\"fabian and tom\" width=\"519\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The conference also presented the opportunity to actually meet many influential figures, including MPs, cabinet ministers, and journalists, meaning it&#8217;s an excellent way to network and meet people who can help to accelerate your political career!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5290\" style=\"width: 517px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/Untitled-design-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5290 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/Untitled-design-4.png\" alt=\"michael, eamon, and fabian\" width=\"517\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eamonn pictured here with Michael Fabricant and Fabian Picardo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are also, of course, many fringe events taking place in the vicinity throughout the weekend, and you can pick which events and issues appeal to you the most and plan your schedule accordingly on the free conservative app, which was really useful during a really busy few days!<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">I attended multiple events, including the Conservative <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Police and Crime C<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ommissioners<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> event on the dangers of marijuana and the Centre for Social Justice event about education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/Untitled-design-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5286\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/Untitled-design-2.png\" alt=\"cannabis and education talks\" width=\"514\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">The Conservative Friends of America<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> event focused on the role of the US and UK as a global force for good, Dr Liam Fox MP and American pollster Frank <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Luntz<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> were in attendance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/liam-cropped-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5294\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/liam-cropped-3.jpg\" alt=\"conservative friends of america\" width=\"516\" height=\"354\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">I also attended the Conservative Friends of India Reception, which hosted speakers including <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Suella<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Braverman, James Cleverley, Kemi Badenoch, Brandon Lewis, Ranil Jayawardena, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Andrea <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Jenkyns<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Michelle <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Donelan<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. Other notable attendees included <\/span><span class=\"s2\">West<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Midlands&#8217; Mayor Andy Street, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the High Commissioner of India Vikram Doraswami, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Bangladesh High Commissioner Saida <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Muna<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Tasneem,<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s7\">Maldives High Commissioner Dr Farah Faizal, and <\/span><span class=\"s7\">Lord Rami Ranger CBE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/priti-patel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5280\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/files\/2022\/11\/priti-patel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"389\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">The general mood was upbeat on the surface, but in private conversations, everybody knew the party was in a bad way, pessimistic about the Truss Government and the next general election.<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> I didn\u2019t go to any of the main speeches given by ministers or the Prime minister because I felt the same way.
