{"id":3337,"date":"2021-05-09T09:35:11","date_gmt":"2021-05-09T09:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/?p=3337"},"modified":"2021-05-20T15:41:03","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T15:41:03","slug":"boris-johnsons-recent-election-win-what-does-it-mean-not-just-for-the-labour-party-but-the-future-of-the-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/2021\/05\/09\/boris-johnsons-recent-election-win-what-does-it-mean-not-just-for-the-labour-party-but-the-future-of-the-union\/","title":{"rendered":"Boris Johnson&#8217;s election victory: what does it mean not just for the future of Labour, but the future of the union?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">&#8216;The challenge for Boris Johnson is that he is finding that the better he does in England, the more he alienates Scotland&#8217;, Professor Matthew Goodwin comments on this week&#8217;s Conservative Party election victories in The New York Times.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>The Conservatives won decisive election victories in this week&#8217;s recent UK regional elections, sweeping aside Labour in its traditional north-eastern English heartland and losing control of Durham County Council, which it has run since 1925,\u00a0 as well as 15 seats as the Tories took 14.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>This follows the Conservatives winning the Hartlepool parliamentary by-election and receiving 73% of the vote in the Tees Valley mayoral election. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/politics-international-relations\/people\/512\/goodwin-matthew\">Professor Matthew Goodwin<\/a> commented on the significance of these successes for The Conservatives and Boris Johnson in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8216;If the Conservatives can take Hartlepool, they can take probably two dozen other blue-collar Labour seats where voters lean left on the economy and right on culture&#8217;, Goodwin commented. &#8216;The Labour Party cannot simply pivot to graduates and middle-class professionals;
