{"id":2932,"date":"2021-03-17T17:02:14","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T17:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/?p=2932"},"modified":"2021-03-17T18:25:28","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T18:25:28","slug":"expert-commentary-on-this-weeks-governmental-review-on-uk-security-defence-development-and-foreign-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/2021\/03\/17\/expert-commentary-on-this-weeks-governmental-review-on-uk-security-defence-development-and-foreign-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Richard Whitman provides expert commentary on this week&#8217;s governmental review on UK Security."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">&#8220;Although the UK\u2019s continuing commitment to Europe\u2019s security and defence is predominant in the document, broader ambitions for the UK in Europe and especially its longer-term ambitions for relations with the EU are notably thin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/politics-international-relations\/people\/2271\/whitman-richard-g\">Professor Richard G Whitman<\/a> has authored a piece on the results of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/global-britain-in-a-competitive-age-the-integrated-review-of-security-defence-development-and-foreign-policy\">the Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy<\/a>, announced by the Prime Minister this week, in the influential independent policy institute and think tank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chathamhouse.org\/\">Chatham House<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Integrated Review is a comprehensive articulation of the UK\u2019s national security and international policy, last updated in the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review -obviously the world has changed considerably since then, but also the UK&#8217;s place within in, not least due our removal from the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Whitman asks if the UK&#8217;s ambitious plans for its future international relevance will produce partnerships which can deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Much anticipated by the UK\u2019s allies and diplomatic partners, its publication does give a clearer sense of the UK\u2019s ambitions and priorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Integrated Review comes against the backdrop of the highest profile for the UK\u2019s diplomacy in decades. The country has begun its presidency of the UN Security Council in February, and is to host both the G7 and UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) this year.
