{"id":2752,"date":"2021-01-12T15:03:21","date_gmt":"2021-01-12T15:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/?p=2752"},"modified":"2021-01-12T15:34:57","modified_gmt":"2021-01-12T15:34:57","slug":"kent-students-make-it-to-the-finals-of-uk-cyber-9-12-strategy-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/polir-news\/2021\/01\/12\/kent-students-make-it-to-the-finals-of-uk-cyber-9-12-strategy-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent students make it to the finals of UK Cyber 9\/12 Strategy Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>POLIR student Ben Treacy is among a team of four Kent students competing as \u2018Kentish Cyber\u2019 in the finals of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyber912uk.org\/en\/\">UK Cyber 9\/12 Strategy Challenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>\u201cIt\u2019s really exciting to be part of the Kentish Cyber team and I am looking forward to competing against the other prestigious universities, it will be a real challenge!&#8221; Ben told us &#8220;I am hoping we get a good result and demonstrate Kent\u2019s collective excellence in Cybersecurity and Policy studies and I hope I can represent the POLIR school well as part of the team.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s the first time the University and Kent\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/cyber\/\">new Institute for Advanced Studies in Cyber Security and Conflict (SoCyETAL)<\/a>\u00a0will be represented at the competition.<\/p>\n<p>The team, coached by\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/politics-international-relations\/people\/2594\/mott-gareth\">Dr Gareth Mott<\/a>, also includes Keenan Jones and Nandita Pattnaik from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/computing\">School of Computing<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\">Law<\/a> student Hala Zein.<\/p>\n<p>The online strategy challenge sees competitors take on the role of senior advisors to government and industry as they face a complex, escalating cyber-attack. Teams use varied technical and non-technical expertise from different disciplines to assess the unfolding threat before briefing a panel of senior UK and international cyber leaders on potential mitigation strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Gareth Mott said: \u2018We are elated and proud that Kentish Cyber have made it through to the final of the UK Cyber 9\/12 Strategy Challenge. We hope our students make the most of this fantastic interactive learning experience and \u201creal-life\u201d scenario-based challenge. This is a great opportunity for our team to gain first-hand experience with the critical challenge of ensuring cyber-security in an increasingly interconnected world. Our staff and students are delighted to be a part of this endeavour for the first time of hopefully many.
