They outline this by noting that his few policy achievements are mostly mainstream Republican ones rather than the radical, anti-establishment, ‘swamp-draining’ changes promised on the campaign trail.

The explanation for this discrepancy is that it is precisely Trump’s extraordinariness as president that has rendered his presidency ordinary.

Dr Wroe said: ‘Donald Trump is absolutely incompetent and ineffectual at being a president, with none of the skills required. He can’t take advice, he doesn’t trust experts and he has no idea how to make the presidency work for him. He sees it as a gameshow where you need to be seen to be winning and everything is funnelled through his focus on himself. As a result his presidency is thus proving quite ordinary in its meagre accomplishments and outcomes.’

Professor McCrisken added: ‘Even the extraordinary spectacle of the US presidentmeeting North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has to date delivered unremarkable results.
