Yvan Guichaoua, Professor in conflict analysis at the Brussels School of International Studies (University of Kent) discusses Franco-American cooperation in the Sahel, in the light of the crisis between Paris and Washington after the torpedoing of a contract for the sale of French submarines to Australia.
The Sahel countries, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad, face many challenges, including chronic insecurity, rising extremism, a lack of economic prospects, and poor access to education, employment and essential services such as water and electricity.
