Fasten Your Seatbelts: Welcome Week 2022

welcome fair

Right now the Political landscape turns in a moment! What an amazing time to be studying this subject. We were delighted to welcome a whole new cohort of students with scavenger hunts around campus, some chill time with Super Mario Kart, and an academic syllabus that is going to be as fast-paced as current political events! Buckle up!

In case you missed it, last week was Welcome Week, where we welcomed over 200 new students to the School of Politics and International Relations!

Kicking off our Welcome Week was the division-wide scavenger hunt, where new students from all four schools competed to win prizes. Entrants were asked to get creative with a list of various campus landmarks or items to take team photographs with, upload to social media with the hashtag #wwscavenge22, and then race back in time for the awards ceremony.  Teams from our school included Cheese Toastie and Teletubbies, with the overall Winning Scavengers being ‘Banana Man’ from the School of Psychology.

On Tuesday afternoon, our academic staff gathered to deliver a welcome lecture to new students, which introduced them to the school and the variety of modules of in their Politics and International Relations degree courses. After which, our new students and staff got to know each other informally at a drinks reception.

“It was so wonderful to meet our new Stage 1 students last week at our Welcome Week events and we are very happy to welcome back our Stage 2 and 3 students this week as well.’ Dr Jane O’Mahony, Director of Studies told us. It’s doubly exciting for us to start this academic year in our new home in Keynes!”

Jane encourages any students have questions or queries regarding their learning, to find her at her regular weekly drop-in surgery in the Politics Student Common Room in Keynes every Tuesday from 2-4pm.

Kent Union’s Welcome Fair, was a massive success – the sun was out and new students joined societies grabbing merch and running from stall-to-stall to shelter from the showers of rain!
