‘A Slow-Motion Cuban Missile Crisis’ in the making

The recent mobilisation of Russian troops ‘all comes back to NATO enlargement’, Richard Sakwa, Professor of Russian and European Politics tells BBC Radio Kent.

Russia’s troop mobilisation at the Ukrainian border in the final days of 2021 have proven worrying for the USA and its allies.  The ‘culmination of many years of complaint’, all ‘stemming back to NATO enlargement’ Professor Richard Sakwa told BBC Radio Kent this week: ‘As far as Moscow has been concerned no one has been listening to them, so this mobilisation is a way of trying to get attention to start negotiations.’

Sakwa discusses the history around Russia’s exclusion from NATO, what the result of Britain’s current military support of Ukraine will be, and what kind of International diplomacy will be necessary to avoid a slowly building crisis.
