{"id":513,"date":"2021-11-25T16:57:45","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T16:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/physastro\/?p=513"},"modified":"2023-03-21T16:58:30","modified_gmt":"2023-03-21T16:58:30","slug":"kent-technicians-recognised-for-covid-19-community-impact-in-industry-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/physastro\/2021\/11\/25\/kent-technicians-recognised-for-covid-19-community-impact-in-industry-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent technicians recognised for Covid-19 community impact in industry awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Technicians at Kent have won a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitalent.ac.uk\/Papin-Prizes\">Papin Prize<\/a>, the UK\u2019s only awards dedicated to celebrating technical excellence and innovation in higher education and research.<\/p>\n<p>The Kent Technical Services Covid-19 PPE Response Team has been recognised for playing a significant role in the community response to Covid-19, producing 4,990 3D printed face shields for frontline care services providers in the Kent region and the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>Colleagues from Kent\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/computing\">School of Computing<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/architecture-planning\">School of Architecture and Planning<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/engineering\">School of Engineering<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/physical-sciences\">School of Physical Sciences<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\">School of Biosciences<\/a>\u00a0collaborated to design and supply the 3D face shields on-site for 11 organisations between April 2020 and July 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, 300 shields were requested, produced, and supplied to East Kent\u2019s largest hospice charity, Pilgrim\u2019s Hospices and were gratefully received by staff battling against the Covid-19 pandemic. After supplying Pilgrims Hospices, the Covid-19 PPE response team then had a number of requests for face shields from local medical centres and charities.<\/p>\n<p>The materials for\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrimshospices.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrimshospices.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pilgrims Hospices<\/a>\u2019 3D shields were donated by\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/ashfordlions.org.uk\/\" href=\"https:\/\/ashfordlions.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ashford Lions Club<\/a>, with funding they received from Kent County Council. While\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.santander.co.uk\/universities\">Santander Universities UK<\/a>\u00a0gave the project a financial boost by funding\u00a03D printers and materials.<\/p>\n<p>The 3D face shields went on to successfully receive CE marking after inspection from the UK national standards body, BSI.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Sinnock, Deputy Director of Information Services and the Technical Lead of the project, said: \u2018I am incredibly proud of all the colleagues involved in the COVID PPE project. Winning this prestigious Papin award is fantastic recognition of their hard work and dedication during such challenging times. The distribution of PPE had such a positive impact on the local community. By coming together and utilising their expertise University technicians were able to make a real difference to the safety of local NHS staff and care workers.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Carole Barron, Director of Knowledge Exchange and Innovation, said: \u2018This is a fantastic achievement \u2013 all involved worked so hard to produce these shields for our community, sharing knowledge, skills and equipment throughout the project.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Winners of the 2021 Papin Prizes were announced at an Awards ceremony at the biannual Higher Education Technician Summit (HETS) 2021 on 10 November at the East Midlands Conference Centre, University of Nottingham.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Technicians at Kent have won a\u00a0Papin Prize, the UK\u2019s only awards dedicated to celebrating technical excellence and innovation in higher education and research.
