{"id":433,"date":"2015-04-27T12:49:48","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T11:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/philanthropy\/?p=433"},"modified":"2024-03-11T12:11:36","modified_gmt":"2024-03-11T12:11:36","slug":"7-days-is-also-a-long-time-in-philanthropy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/philanthropy\/2015\/04\/27\/7-days-is-also-a-long-time-in-philanthropy\/","title":{"rendered":"7 days is also a long time in philanthropy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The political sphere\u00a0normally lays claim to a monopoly on momentum, with the oft-quoted line:\u00a0&#8216;a week is a long time in politics&#8217;.\u00a0But the last 7\u00a0days have seen a huge amount of activity and new developments\u00a0for philanthropy in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beaconawards.org.uk\">2015 Beacon awards<\/a> were announced &#8211; including an extremely well deserved celebration of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearsfoundation.org.uk\/#24\/trustees-staff-financial\">Trevor Pears<\/a>, whose family foundation has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/society\/4648\/new-pears-philanthropy-fellow-at-university\">generously supported our newest colleague<\/a>, Pears Philanthropy Fellow\u00a0Dr Triona Fitton.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/philanthropy\/files\/2015\/04\/jazmin-quaynor-18mUXUS8ksI-unsplash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-496 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/philanthropy\/files\/2015\/04\/jazmin-quaynor-18mUXUS8ksI-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@jazminantoinette?utm_content=creditCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=unsplash\">Jazmin Quaynor<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/closeup-photo-of-ballpoint-pen-near-camera-18mUXUS8ksI?utm_content=creditCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=unsplash\">Unsplash<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Secondly, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafonline.org\/my-personal-giving\/sunday-times-giving-list-2015.aspx?gclid=CMTj5aSYlsUCFU_HtAodU1wA8Q\">annual Giving List<\/a>, published as part of the annual Sunday Times Rich List in association with CAF,\u00a0reported that\u00a0the richest members of our society collectively gave away \u00a32.6 billion last year, an 8% increase on the previous year, and including four people who gave away 9-figure sums (\u00a3100 million or more). Whilst the top spot on the main Rich List is now held by Len Blavatnik,\u00a0who made one of the UK&#8217;s biggest-ever donations in 2010 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-oxfordshire-11370396\">\u00a375m to Oxford University<\/a>), another generous donor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilsociety.co.uk\/fundraising\/news\/content\/19539\/philanthropist_gives_himself_off_of_the_sunday_times_rich_list\">Richard Ross, has &#8216;donated himself off the Rich List&#8217;<\/a> by giving so much away.<\/p>\n<p>Thirdly, a new academic centre has been launched at the LSE, which will help to advance the nascent field of philanthropic studies.
