{"id":214,"date":"2019-04-10T16:03:29","date_gmt":"2019-04-10T15:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/pharmacy\/?p=214"},"modified":"2020-02-25T16:05:00","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T16:05:00","slug":"congratulations-vilius-savickas-winner-of-the-2019-3mt-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/pharmacy\/2019\/04\/10\/congratulations-vilius-savickas-winner-of-the-2019-3mt-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations Vilius Savickas \u2013 Winner of the 2019 3MT\u00ae Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The challenge, presenting 80,000 word thesis in just 3 minute using only a single static slide.<\/p>\n<p>The Three Minute Thesis (3MT\u00ae) is an internationally recognised competition that requires PhD students to present their research in 3 minutes.\u00a0The concept was developed in 2008 by The University of Queensland, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Vilius Savickas is the winner of the 2019 3MT competition at the University of Greenwich.<\/p>\n<p>The award was presented by Professor Javier Bonet, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>His presentation was titled: Atrial Fibrillation Screening in Care Homes by Clinical Pharmacists.<\/p>\n<p>Vilius won the competition with a compelling presentation based on #thisisjerry.\u00a0A 90 year old former physicist who lives in a care home and is suffering from Atrial Fibrillation (AF), a \u201cfunny\u201d heart rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis opportunity was a great learning experience.\u00a0We learnt how to simplify our research in simple terms and grab the attention of a wider audience. I encourage all PhD students to take part\u201d &#8211; Vilius Savickas.<\/p>\n<p>Vilius is an active researcher who is passionately advocating for better care for the ageing population.\u00a0He\u2019s been exploring the role of clinical pharmacists in detecting atrial fibrillation, focusing primarily on stroke prevention.\u00a0His research covers public health and the role of registered pharmacy professionals in primary care settings.<\/p>\n<p>Vilius\u2019s research shows 1-in-3 patients show signs of previous conditions that were not re-examined; leading to a number of complicated treatments.\u00a0\u201cThe worry is, these patients are not being checked in the same capacity. There is a systematic issue that needs to be addressed\u201d Vilius Savickas.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting Vilius emphasised the importance of partnership, he said \u201cthis research would not have been this successful without the support of a number of people\u201d.\u00a0List of acknowledgement found below.<\/p>\n<p>He is the first candidate at the University of Greenwich to have been given the opportunity to compete at a national level.<\/p>\n<p>Vilius won \u00a31,500 funding towards conferences and further training.\u00a0This was in addition to the \u00a31,000 he won during the faculty heat in Medway.<\/p>\n<p>He plans to continue on campaigning for #thisisjerry.\u00a0He hopes with this opportunity he can continue on advocating for better care for all patients: \u201cthe need for everyone to receive the same level of care regardless of age is vital\u201d Vilius Savickas.<\/p>\n<p>Follow Vilius @viliussavickas<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The challenge, presenting 80,000 word thesis in just 3 minute using only a single static slide.
