Abstract: The recently departed John Horton Conway was a prolific mathematician whose work was often inspired by games and puzzles. I hope to demonstrate and explain a few of his results, including the Doomsday algorithm for mentally calculating the day of the week for any calendar date, and the problem of Conway’s soldiers for playing games of draughts on an infinite checkerboard.
