{"id":841,"date":"2019-03-08T10:36:15","date_gmt":"2019-03-08T10:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/?p=841"},"modified":"2021-04-30T13:21:23","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T13:21:23","slug":"author-deborah-levy-gives-annual-paris-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/2019\/03\/08\/author-deborah-levy-gives-annual-paris-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Author Deborah Levy gives annual Paris lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-main\">\n<p>On Tuesday 5 March, playwright, novelist, and poet Deborah Levy FRSL gave the University\u2019s annual Paris lecture to invited guests in the British Ambassador\u2019s Residence on rue du Faubourg St-Honor\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Her lecture\u00a0reflected on her <strong>early experiences as a yet-unpublished writer<\/strong> and the\u00a0<strong>determination and perseverance<\/strong> that was born from the rejection of her first story by a literary magazine.\u00a0She also spoke about the influence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poets\/guillaume-apollinaire\">Guillaume Apollinaire<\/a> on her writing, particularly on the composition of her novel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/books\/304\/304942\/swimming-home\/9780241984765.html\"><em>Swimming Home<\/em><\/a>, and his importance as the <strong>precursor of surrealism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/ovc\/people\/profiles\/karen_cox.html\">Professor Karen Cox<\/a>, the University\u2019s Vice-Chancellor and President, gave the welcome and introductions.<\/p>\n<p>Guests included:\u00a0<strong>Matthew Lodge, Minister and Ambassador of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to UNESCO<\/strong>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/ovc\/people\/profiles\/jeremy_carrette.html\">Professor Jeremy Carrette, Kent\u2019s Dean for Europe<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/staff\/brown.html\">Professor Peter Brown<\/a>, Academic Director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/paris\/\">Paris School of Arts and Culture<\/a>; current students; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/alumni\/\">alumni<\/a>; and friends of the University.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s annual lecture was both a\u00a0<strong>celebration<\/strong>\u00a0of the Paris School of Arts and Culture and Kent\u2019s\u00a0<strong>celebration<\/strong> of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/events\/20years\/\">20 Years in Europe<\/a>\u2019 .<\/p>\n<p>Professor Brown said: \u2018On behalf of the University I would like to thank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/authors\/7514\/deborah-levy.html\">Deborah Levy<\/a> for a <strong>fascinating lecture<\/strong>. The evening itself was a <strong>memorable celebration<\/strong> of the University\u2019s connections with France over the past ten years, bringing together current students at the Paris School of Arts and Culture, alumni, and our partners such as <a href=\"https:\/\/globalcenters.columbia.edu\/paris\">Columbia Global Center<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Located in <strong>Montparnasse<\/strong>, the Paris School of Arts and Culture is one of Kent\u2019s specialist European\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/\">postgraduate\u00a0<\/a>centres (the others are in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/brussels\/\">Brussels<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/rome\/\">Rome\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/locations\/athens\/index.html\">Athens<\/a>).
