{"id":810,"date":"2019-01-28T15:55:37","date_gmt":"2019-01-28T15:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/?p=810"},"modified":"2019-01-28T14:55:49","modified_gmt":"2019-01-28T14:55:49","slug":"kent-historian-uncovers-danny-dyers-royal-ancestry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/2019\/01\/28\/kent-historian-uncovers-danny-dyers-royal-ancestry\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent historian uncovers Danny Dyer\u2019s royal ancestry"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<div class=\"content-container\">\n<div class=\"content-main\">\n<p class=\"lead\">University historian Dr Emily Guerry, who teaches at the University of Kent&#8217;s Paris School of Arts and Culture, will reveal that Danny Dyer is a direct descendant of the French King Louis IX (1214\u20131270), who was canonized a saint in 1297, in a new TV series.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"content-body\">\n<div class=\"content-container\">\n<div class=\"content-main\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/history\/staff\/profiles\/guerry.html\">Dr Guerry<\/a>, of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/history\/index.html\">School of History<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/mems\/\">Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies<\/a>(MEMS), helps the\u00a0<strong>EastEnders actor<\/strong>\u00a0make the discovery during \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b0c0x03s\">Danny Dyer\u2019s Right Royal Family<\/a>\u2018, which airs at 9PM on 23 January on BBC One.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Guerry, a medieval historian, explains to Dyer that\u00a0<strong>his distant ancestor was extremely pious<\/strong>. He pierced the tongues of blasphemers, he prayed like a monk, and when he acquired\u00a0<strong>the relic of the Crown of Thorns, purported to be worn by Jesus Christ at his crucifixion<\/strong>, he led a humble procession through the streets of Paris in honour of its arrival. As part of the programme, Danny Dyer\u00a0<strong>restaged this sacred event<\/strong>\u00a0by wearing only a linen\u00a0tunic and walking barefoot through the French capital while carrying a replica of the relic (<strong>accompanied by a medieval choir<\/strong>). Dyer also pays a special visit with Dr Guerry to the Sainte-Chapelle, the Gothic chapel designed to contain the Crown relic.<\/p>\n<p>For Dr Guerry, \u2018it was\u00a0<strong>an absolute delight to work with Danny Dyer<\/strong>\u00a0and share my knowledge and intellectual passion for King Louis IX and the Sainte-Chapelle with him.\u00a0<strong>I never imagined that I would meet a\u00a0direct descendant of Louis<\/strong>\u00a0(or that this person would be a famous actor) but I\u2019ve enjoyed every minute of working on this project with the BBC.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In her research, Dr Guerry examines the relationship between\u00a0<strong>religious devotion and artistic representation<\/strong>\u00a0in the Middle Ages.
