{"id":480,"date":"2016-08-10T08:56:22","date_gmt":"2016-08-10T08:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/?p=480"},"modified":"2016-08-10T08:56:22","modified_gmt":"2016-08-10T08:56:22","slug":"european-summer-schools-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/2016\/08\/10\/european-summer-schools-success\/","title":{"rendered":"European Summer Schools success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Summer Schools at the University\u2019s centres in Paris and Brussels have just taken place for the fourth time since they were first created in 2013 as part of our\u00a050th anniversary celebrations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/files\/2016\/08\/13926039_1816745058546350_4854430155706539313_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-481\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/files\/2016\/08\/13926039_1816745058546350_4854430155706539313_o-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"13926039_1816745058546350_4854430155706539313_o\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/files\/2016\/08\/13926039_1816745058546350_4854430155706539313_o-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/files\/2016\/08\/13926039_1816745058546350_4854430155706539313_o-768x502.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/files\/2016\/08\/13926039_1816745058546350_4854430155706539313_o-1024x669.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/files\/2016\/08\/13926039_1816745058546350_4854430155706539313_o-624x408.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/paris-news\/files\/2016\/08\/13926039_1816745058546350_4854430155706539313_o.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scholarships were awarded to Kent Undergraduate students and external applicants to spend a fortnight participating in academic sessions and cultural activities in these two major European capital cities.<\/p>\n<p>Students in Brussels studied on the theme of \u2018Europe and the World\u2019 benefitting from dynamic sessions including those on International Migration, European Neighbourhood Policy and a discussion with a member of the British Embassy on the EU referendum result and the future of the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Students also had the chance to visit the European Parliament to discuss the EU with a current MEP, as well as to take part in an all-day guided tour of the battlefields of WW1 in Ypres, Flanders. Here, students learned about the human cost and political impact of the First World War and discovered how it helped to shape today\u2019s Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Students in Paris studied on the theme of \u2018Revolutions\u2019 immersing themselves in French culture by exploring the city\u2019s art, architecture, film, drama, writing and philosophy. Through a series of interconnected lectures and excursions guided by academic specialists, students visited a wide range of culturally and historically significant sites including the Pompidou centre, Versailles and Picasso Museum.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the Summer School, the students had developed close friendships with each other and had gained analytical and intercultural skills that they can take with them into their studies and out into the job market.
