We were especially pleased to welcome academic colleagues from Sweden, Iceland and Germany to share their ideas from political science, natural science and sociology.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion engaged in three broad themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intensive motherhood and infant\u00a0feeding<\/li>\n<li>Ethics and the problems of breastfeeding promotion in public health policy<\/li>\n<li>Science, \u2018scientisation\u2019 and evidence in research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recordings of the sessions available below<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8sRgZGApMf8&amp;list=PL55F74A40A1315F0B&amp;index=3&amp;t=60s\">Welcome to the Event\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TgCzEeCP_qA&amp;list=PL55F74A40A1315F0B&amp;index=2\">Parenting culture and feeding babies &#8211; Insights from qualitative research\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Oa6plEQhHZY&amp;list=PL55F74A40A1315F0B&amp;index=1&amp;t=37s\">Parenting culture and feeding babies &#8211; Problems of Infant Feeding Policy\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Background to the event <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Published initially as the report \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/kar.kent.ac.uk\/25249\/\">Mothers\u2019 experience of, and attitudes to, the use of infant formula for feeding babies<\/a>\u2019, research conducted two decades ago by Ellie Lee and Frank Furedi became the basis for <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/parentingculturestudies\/research-themes\/feeding-babies-and-children\/\">publications, events and international collaborations.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At its heart, the research brought to light the gap between the experience of the everyday, personal practical realities of feeding babies (the \u2018is\u2019 of feeding babies), and the public accounts and policies around it (the \u2018ought\u2019). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sociologylens.net\/article-types\/opinion\/infant-feeding-need-sociology\/24381\">This tension is discussed here<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/parentingculturestudies\/research-themes\/feeding-babies-and-children\/cpcs-briefings\/\">key themes in the work are set out here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This initial research took many of us into a project that that spread across many dimensions of parenting culture, beyond simply feeding babies. Read about <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/parentingculturestudies\/about\/\">our story<\/a>.\u00a0Twenty years ago, however, there were far fewer voices, for example, from campaign groups and in the media, drawing attention to pertinent questions around infant feeding.
