Director Vincenzo Natali is eager to realise the supposedly un-filmable novel,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/film\/filmblog\/2010\/may\/14\/william-gibson-neuromancer-vincenzo-natali\"> the papers have reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An earlier attempt to make Gibson\u2019s techno-filled prose into a film resulted in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0113481\/\">Johnny Mnemonic<\/a><\/em>, which has a brilliant idea at its heart \u2013 people who smuggle data in chips inside their head, jacking in to servers to download information into a storage device \u2018wet-wired\u2019 into the brain. But the film didn\u2019t manage visually to live up to the potential of Gibson\u2019s vibrant literary imaginings, and one wonders whether the techno-ridden crackle of <em>Neuromancer<\/em> can similarly be translated onto the screen, with better results.<\/p>\n<p>Published in 1984 (Orwell would have approved), <em>Neuromancer<\/em>\u2019s influence on science-fiction literature and film has been immense, most noticeably in <em>The Matrix<\/em> and its sequels (although, to my mind, <em>The Matrix<\/em> is more derivative of Philip Jose Farmer\u2019s fantastic <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Riverworld\">Riverworld<\/a><\/em> sequence, but that\u2019s for another article).<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s to be realised in a manner which captures the energy of the prose, the boundary-pushing imaginings and the idea of a world morphed by technology to such an extent as Gibson uses time and again in his writing, it will need to do so in a way that doesn\u2019t make it seem itself a descendant of <em>The Matrix <\/em>and its children \u2013 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0238380\/\">Equilibrium<\/a><\/em> springs to mind.<\/p>\n<p>Should <em>Neuromancer<\/em> come off the page, or should it be left up to the reader to realise Gibson&#8217;s amazing vision ?<\/p>\n<p>Posted by <strong>Daniel Harding<\/strong>, Deputy Director of Music at the <a href=\"http:\/\/kent.ac.uk\/music\" target=\"_blank\">University of Kent<\/a>.
