{"id":310,"date":"2017-05-18T14:56:35","date_gmt":"2017-05-18T13:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/outreach-news\/?p=310"},"modified":"2017-10-27T12:39:30","modified_gmt":"2017-10-27T11:39:30","slug":"maths-whats-the-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/outreach-news\/2017\/05\/18\/maths-whats-the-point\/","title":{"rendered":"Maths: What\u2019s the Point?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday 25 April, the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science ran \u2018Maths: What\u2019s the Point\u2019 for year 9 students who attend our Partner and KMPF schools. The event was designed to offer students a hands-on introduction as to how Maths is used outside the classroom, with sessions being both fun and educational.<\/p>\n<p>As well having the opportunity to meet with some of our undergraduate ambassadors, the visiting students were involved with a mixture of sessions including the Art of Codebreaking, Fraud Detection Using Statistics, and Topology &amp; Play-Doh. These sessions were led by our experienced ambassadors who are currently studying across a range of our degree programmes.<\/p>\n<p>Feedback from the activities were extremely positive; for example, the Codebreaking session was described as \u2018<em>exciting<\/em>\u2019 and that \u2018<em>students were proactive in encrypting and decrypting their own messages<\/em>\u2019. The Fraud Detection session had similar positive comments from a teacher who attended: \u2018<em>Presenter was very engaged and knowledgeable about the topic. Task was engaging and set at an appropriate level for the students<\/em>\u2019.
