{"id":2350,"date":"2024-04-11T10:40:50","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T09:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/outreach-news\/?p=2350"},"modified":"2024-04-19T15:31:04","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T14:31:04","slug":"2350","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/outreach-news\/2024\/04\/11\/2350\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-16 Outreach Offer &#8211; 2023\/24"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/outreach-news\/files\/2021\/10\/DSCF1981.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Spotlight On<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; <strong>n<\/strong><strong>on-residential subject summer school days<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our last bulletin, the post-16 team shared with you the launch of <strong><em>Spotlight On<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; our new programme of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>subject-based, non-residential summer school days. Running from <strong>Monday 24<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0to Friday 28<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0June<\/strong>, we are pleased to announce our full list of subjects below.<\/p>\n<p>Just to remind you, the days are designed to introduce year 12 students to both the academic and non-curricular side of university life. They provide a perfect opportunity to experience the feel of a summer school, without needing to stay overnight. Our &#8216;<em>university in a day&#8217; <\/em>tasters will run from 10am until 7.30pm. Students will immerse themselves in a programme of academic content from University of Kent academics in their chosen subject, together with extra-curricular activities, running into the evening.<\/p>\n<p>Full details of the days are as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday 24 June:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Law<\/strong>\u2013 a session introducing the legal system (focussing on a topical legal issue), followed by a practical negotiation session. Attendees will be able to experience our Moot Court.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engineering<\/strong>\u2013 this day will feature a tour of our engineering laboratories (including our very own Omron robot), an academic talk, an inverted pendulum workshop, and a talk on careers within digital design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tuesday 25 June:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bioscience <\/strong>\u2013 this visit will focus on cancer research, including two academic talks on why cancer is so difficult to cure and the development of cancer drugs, alongside a debating workshop looking at the ethics of animal testing within cancer research.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Forensics<\/strong>\u2013 sessions to include finger printing workshop, a chance to see our UK-leading facilities, and contextual careers talk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Architecture <\/strong>\u2013 details to be fully confirmed nearer the time but the session will include an outdoor site visit and will collaborate with academics from the Spatial Interiors course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Wednesday 26 June:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Physics<\/strong>\u2013 details to be confirmed closer to the time, but the sessions will include a computational physics workshop, a chance to see the facilities, and a careers insight<\/li>\n<li><strong>Computing<\/strong>\u2013 this day will feature two academic talks, one covering the history of computer science from ancient Babylon to quantum computing and the other collision detection in game design, alongside a debating workshop around AI and a careers talk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Thursday 27 June:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chemistry <\/strong>\u2013 Sessions to include a taster of undergraduate practicals in the teaching labs, and an overview of career pathways following studying Chemistry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sports \u2013 <\/strong>this visit will give you the opportunity to see our sport science laboratories, create your own sports drink, test your reaction time, and learn how a degree in sports science can allow you to both support top athletes and individuals recovering from injuries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Friday 28 June:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Creative Writing \u2013 <\/strong>this day will feature a series of writing workshops, a mock literature seminar, and a talk about all the strange and wonderful things you can do with a degree in creative writing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Business<\/strong>\u2013 an interactive \u2018Hire or Fire\u2019 day, with an additional session on sustainable business. The day will conclude with a contextual careers in business talk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most of our subjects have a maximum of 25-30 students.<\/p>\n<p>Schools can book places for groups of students, but we are also very happy to receive direct applications from students who would like to attend as individuals. <strong>All food and transport costs will be provided.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To book, please scan the QR code on the accompanying poster.<strong>\u00a0The deadline for application is Friday 24<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0May.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have any queries about any aspect of the event, please do get in touch with us at <a href=\"mailto:outreach@kent.ac.uk\">outreach@kent.ac.uk<\/a> and we will answer any questions that you have.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/outreach-news\/files\/2024\/04\/Summer-Series.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>____________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Exploring University<\/em> visit days<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Part of our <strong><em>Journey to Uni<\/em><\/strong> programme, year 12 students on our Exploring University visit days will experience an immersive and fun day on our Canterbury campus. Supported by our student ambassadors, they will explore the extra-curricular side of university life, and have an opportunity to investigate what they might like from their own university experience.<\/p>\n<p>There are four main sections to the day:<\/p>\n<p><strong>University Life<\/strong>: An introduction to student life at university, where do students live, socialise, study?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can you study at university?<\/strong>: An introduction to university subjects, how they are taught and how to research degrees on UCAS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Campus Tour<\/strong>: Student ambassadors lead tours of university facilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>University<\/strong>: Not just a place to study! An introduction to what extra-curricular activities students can get involved in.<\/p>\n<p>We have space available on the following dates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wednesday 8 May<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday 15 May<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students will experience a free lunch on the day from one of our campus outlets, which they will eat in our nightclub, <em>The Venue<\/em>, giving them an opportunity to feel part of campus life.
