{"id":154,"date":"2016-10-14T12:45:51","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T11:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/outreach-news\/?p=154"},"modified":"2017-10-27T13:34:13","modified_gmt":"2017-10-27T12:34:13","slug":"forensics-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/outreach-news\/2016\/10\/14\/forensics-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Forensics Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Anthropology and Conservation will be running the following event on either Wednesday 21 June or Monday 17 July 2017.\u00a0 If you are interested, please contact Michael Collingwood (<a href=\"mailto:mc404@kent.ac.uk\">mc404@kent.ac.uk<\/a>), stating which date you would prefer and\/or if you could attend either date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Event title:<\/strong> Forensics Day<\/p>\n<p><strong>Times:<\/strong> 09:45-14:30<\/p>\n<p><strong>Location:<\/strong> Canterbury campus<\/p>\n<p><strong>Age group:<\/strong> Year 10 (year 11 can also be included if there is interest)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Subject:<\/strong> Anthropology and Conservation<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maximum number:<\/strong> 45<\/p>\n<p><strong>Description:<\/strong> Students will take part in two workshop sessions during the day:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Workshop 1: Forensic Anthropology methods<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is a laboratory based course held at the Skeletal Biology Research Centre of the School of Anthropology and Conservation, University of Kent, Canterbury. The course is designed for secondary school students with limited or no knowledge, but significant interest, in osteology and forensic anthropology. Topics include human versus non-human osteology, skeletal inventory, estimation of biological characteristics (age, sex, ancestry, stature), identification methods, and trauma interpretation. Participants will gain hands-on training by examining human remains during the session.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Workshop 2: Wildlife Forensics<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is an interactive session based at the School of Anthropology and Conservation on the Canterbury campus. The session is designed for secondary school students with limited or no knowledge, but significant interest, in wildlife, conservation and conflict. Topics include an introduction to conservation, endangered wildlife, potential solutions, case study-based activities.
