Over four days last week over 350 students from 10 schools visited the Canterbury campus to spend a day in the life of a student. Each day was made up of a combination of subject tasters, workshops on University life and an exciting challenge which took participants all over the campus, following in the footsteps of a typical student. A team of 20 student ambassadors were on hand to guide the students through each day, enthusing them about university life and answering any and every question the students had from “What is the worst prank that happened in your university accommodation?” to “What mental health support is available at university?”.
Feedback from the days has been hugely positive with students commenting that they found the day enjoyable, interesting and helpful. Several students reported that the day had made them less nervous about university and some of them are already making plans to return when they can. Staff feedback from accompanying teachers was excellent and many said that their students were heading home with a greater understanding of higher education and a desire to apply to university when they are ready.
