On Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 July 2017, for the first time, the Partnership Development Office ran a Year 12 Residential Summer School for students from the University’s partner schools across Kent and Medway.
The Summer School was designed for students who are considering higher education, to encourage them to explore the array of options available to them and to help them make informed decisions about which courses and institutions to apply to.
In total, 27 students attended and stayed overnight in University accommodation situated within Turing College. Participants were given the opportunity to experience life on campus, attend subject taster sessions and receive targeted information in workshops specifically designed to help them consider their options effectively. In the evening they undertook fun team-building activities including a cooking challenge, society taster session and a quiz.
On the second day of the Summer School, students visited Canterbury Christchurch University which allowed them to further consider how institutions may differ in terms of location, campus and courses on offer.
Throughout the Summer School, participating students were supported by current Student Ambassador Mentors who were able to answer questions from a current student’s perspective and encourage discussion and reflection around various topics and experiences.
Student feedback has been very positive, with participants commenting that they enjoyed the Summer School and developed valuable skills as well as a better understanding of university life.
“The showcase of university level sessions helped with providing a fun yet challenging experience…it was all fantastic”
