The School of Pharmacy at the University of Kent are offering some workshops for schools to highlight the role played by the atmosphere and how climate change is affecting its equilibrium.
Schools can choose to participate in Workshop 1 only or do both Workshop 1 and Workshop 2. It may be possible to run both workshops on the same day subject to availability and the location of the field trip.
Workshop 1: This 2½ – 3 hour hands-on workshop is designed for a maximum of 30 Year 10-12 students and is delivered in school. Current postgraduate students from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Kent will deliver a session looking at climate change from a fresh perspective by focusing on man made atmospheric phenomena which are the result of pollution. Activities include making artificial acid rain, exploring how the impact of pollution is drastically altered by local weather conditions and creating an artificial self-supported ecosystem. To highlight the complexity of the science behind the atmosphere, each experiment is focused around one particular scientific discipline: Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
Workshop 2: This 2 hour field trip will focus on climate change/environmental issues. To ensure the students see real world examples of the strides being made to combat climate change, we plan to visit a company or governmental agency involved in the field. This will build upon the scientific knowledge and ideas generated in workshop 1.
