The School of Anthropology and Conservation is running a series of taster sessions in Biological Anthropology for A-level Biology students.
Sessions are designed to enhance understanding of the taught curriculum, while allowing students to gain a broader insight into the ways in which biology can be applied in anthropology. Each session will include short lectures combined with ‘hands on’ experience where students will see human remains and primate skeletons, fossils, and gain an understanding of forensic recovery and disaster management. Each session finishes with a tour of our laboratories.
Each session will include:
• Forensics
• Human evolution
• Human and primate behaviour
• Bioarchaeology
Sessions will be delivered by eight academic staff who are world leading experts in Biological Anthropology.
Schools can choose from a variety of dates and times as dates listed below:
- Tuesday 3rd December 11:00-13:00 OR 13:00-15:00
- Wednesday 4th December 11:00-13:00 OR 13:00-15:00
- Tuesday 10th December 11:00-13:00 OR 13:00-15:00
- Wednesday 11th December 11:00-13:00 OR 13:00-15:00
This is an opportunity for students to gain a few hours experience within a University campus setting and interact with staff and University student ambassadors who will be present throughout the day. The material we will be covering will allow your students to reflect on humans as biological animals. It will help them to understand our origins and evolution and how we have adapted to live in a range of different environments, corresponding with many aspects of the current A level biology curriculum. We will provide a number of real world examples and hands on experiences, which will augment the concepts of evolution, adaptation, and human variation for your students.
This activity is open to Year 12 and 13 students and will take place at the University of Kent, Canterbury Campus. This event is free to Partner and KMPF schools to attend.
In order to book please contact Michael Collingwood via mc404@kent.ac.uk. When booking please specify which date and time you would like to attend.
