SPARK Project

The University of Kent recently funded a new astronomical observatory as one of their Beacon Projects. As part of the overall program for the observatory, we plan to offer research time in the telescope observing schedule to schools to allow students and teachers to use a research level telescope for projects of their own devising.

The SPARK project aims to provide a unique hands on experience for school students and teachers fully encompassing all aspects of astronomical research, from project planning and target selection, observing and data analysis. It is envisaged the project will provide a stronger collaboration between academics and participants and hence, we hope, increase engagement and impact.

If you would like to be involved in the project, we are seeking schools to participate in the pilot phase in January 2019 (the week commencing 07 January). The project is suitable for year 11 or 12 students, either a whole class or an Astronomy group/STEM club. Please do get in touch at science@kent.ac.uk if you would like to know more about the project.
