National Gallery Speaking and Listening Project (GCSE French)

The University of Kent are pleased to offer Partner and KMPF schools a new exciting opportunity to visit the National Gallery in London as part of a new GCSE French Speaking and Listening Project.

The trip will take place late Autumn 2018 and is designed to support schools preparing students for the picture stimulus element of the oral exam. The aim of this project is to raise students’ confidence and attainment in speaking and listening tasks, and to develop a love of language learning through engagement with cultural material.

Before the trip, students will have the chance to learn about French Impressionism by participating in a workshop with various elements designed to practice speaking and listening, and introduce Impressionist paintings.

On the day of the trip students will have a one-hour ‘History through Art’ guided tour, where they will look in detail at three Impressionist paintings. After the guided tour, the pupils will be put into small groups with Student Ambassadors to practice their speaking skills by discussing the paintings in their group.

In the weeks after the trip, pupils will have the opportunity to write a brief description of one of the paintings. These will be entered into a competition, and the winning entry will be displayed on the University of Kent website.
