KaMCOP Activities

Over the last two weeks, the staff at the University of Kent have been have been busy delivering a variety of activities in schools across the county as part of the Kent and Medway Collaborative Outreach Programme (KaMCOP).

From the 04-08 June, University of Kent ambassadors visited the Victory Academy, Chatham, delivering two programmes to Year 12 students:

  • SUCCEED – a 6-session programme that encourages students to explore their post-18 options and consider whether university is the right path for them.
  • The University Support Course – a longer-term programme that assists students with the UCAS application process, in particular exploring possible course and study options and how to write an effective personal statement.

Both activities were very well received by the students at the Victory Academy, with feedback such as:

  • “I’ve learnt who I actually am and what do I want to achieve in the future.”
  • “[I’ve learnt] that there is more choice available to personalise your degree than I expected/realised.”

Following these activities, we will be returning to the Victory Academy later this year to continue supporting their KaMCOP students with their future choices.

In addition to our work at the Victory Academy, we have also been working with Year 9 and 10 students at Highworth Grammar School for Girls for the first time. On the 13 and 14 of June, the University of Kent delivered four sessions of the “Confidence in the Classroom” workshop with Key Stage 4 students to encourage them to realise the wealth of transferable skills they possess and how they can develop these skills in their school studies.

These fun and interactive sessions were thoroughly enjoyed by the students who attended and were a fantastic preparation for the “Confidence in Communication” events being held on the Canterbury campus on the 28 June and the 6 July. Over these two visit days, students will be able to explore the university campus and learn more about how the skill of communication is used across different academic disciplines, such as Mathematics, Social Sciences, and English.

With the onset of the University’s Summer Core period, we expect to work with many more schools, both on campus and in school, to improve their awareness of Higher Education and their own abilities.
