The First World War in Schools Commemoration Project

The University of Kent and the Gateways to the First World War research centre, working in partnership with secondary schools and colleges, have created a First World War in Schools Commemoration Project to be developed over the centenary period. It aims to bring together schools and University departments in the Faculty of Humanities in order to further engage students and teachers alike in the centenary of the First World War.

Up until the end of December 2018, schools in the Kent area will have the opportunity to work with members of the Project team and those in academic departments of the University of Kent in a number of different ways in order to promote the centenary of the First World War.

There are a number of different opportunities for teachers and students within schools to participate in the project:

‘Studying the First World War in the Humanities’ Year 12 Conference Day

This conference is designed for students to tackle the First World War using different approaches, while refining and learning new skills to aid their current and future studies. This is due to take place at the end of the academic year, however the date is still to be confirmed. We are currently asking that any school who would be interested in attending this event email an expression of interest to the contact details provided below.

Curriculum Support

Curriculum support provides flexible skills based sessions to support students in their GCSE’s or A Level’s. It is particularly relevant for students studying History and/or English. These sessions consist of a series of workshops that focus on historical and analytical skills, as well as general study and revision skills. Using the First World War and related topics as the basis for study, these sessions can be tailored towards a variety of curriculum options, depending on the requirements of the school.

Study Days

These will take place on a university campus, and make use of the library facilities in order to explore the war in more details and aid with the completion of coursework or assignments.

Weekly Sessions

These are available to help aid schools in the completion of a school centenary project or exhibition, or for those students who wish to undertake an Extended Project Qualification on a First World War topic.

All activities can be adapted to suit the needs of the school. If you have any questions regarding any of the above or if you would like to book, please email w.m.butler@kent.ac.uk
