Students visit Medway campus for a day of debating

On Thursday 22nd June, ten students from Brompton Academy came to the Medway campus for a debating day. During the academic year, these Year 11 students organised and participated in an after-school debating club with the support of the University of Kent, and as and end of year celebration they asked the University to organise a debating day on campus.

During the morning, the students participated in a public speaking workshop, where they learned different techniques that they could then apply in the big debate in the afternoon. The big debate, “This house would re-implement capital punishment”, resulted in some enthusiastic and passionate arguments from both sides. This day was a great opportunity for everyone involved to celebrate how much the students have learnt and improved since the debating club started in December 2016. The students themselves recognised how much their public speaking skills and their ability to construct strong arguments had improved over the last few months. We are delighted to continue supporting the after school club next year.
