As part of the First World War Schools Project, on Wednesday 22nd June, Year 7 students from the Towers School and Sixth Form Centre in Ashford launched and presented their exhibition in the Grimond building on the Canterbury campus, in front of parents, students, and University of Kent staff. The exhibition was the culmination of six months’ work, supported by Dr Mario Draper and Tracey Falcon, which included many weeks of research, creative writing, a field trip to the Imperial War Museum in London, and the completion of the Bronze Arts Award qualification.
The afternoon’s events also included performances, by pupils from the Canterbury Academy and Herne Bay High School, of plays written during the First World War. The drama students from Year 9 and Year 12 spent the day at the Canterbury campus, interpreting, devising and working on their performances, with sessions run by postgraduates and staff within the School of Arts.
Students from the Towers School will be displaying their exhibition back at the school and presenting their work during their end of year assembly in the middle of July. Members of the Project will also continue to work with them, as well as the drama students, in a series of workshops focusing on the First World War during the next academic year.
