Computing activities (in school)

The School of Computing has developed two workshops to support and introduce students to the field of computing. We currently have availability to deliver these workshops in school on either Tuesday 21 June  or Tuesday 28 June 2016. Additional information about the workshops can be found below:

  • Create a weather station – Students will have the opportunity to programme and create their own weather station, using SAM Wireless blocks. These 15 blocks each have a specific talent and are controlled using a central app. This workshop will introduce students to the idea of “the internet of things” a new age of engineering that requires no wires and limited coding. This workshop will last for a minimum of one hour and is suitable for up to 20 students in years 9 and 10.
  • Introduction to Java Programming – This workshop will introduce students to the Java Programming Language, used by first-year undergraduates at the University of Kent. Students will use this language to programme Arduino boards which are able to read inputs, for example, a finger on a button, and turn this into an output such as turning on an LED or displaying text on a screen. This workshop can be flexible in duration and is suited to sixth form students who have some programming experience.

Please note availability for these events is limited. If you require any additional information or would like to book a place, please email outreach@kent.ac.uk.
