Kudos is a free tool which allows you to widen the audience of your publication by adding\u00a0a\u00a0simpler title, a plain language\u00a0summary, a statement on why the research is important, and an\u00a0author perspective. You can then easily share your publication via Kudos and it will measure\u00a0how effective your Social Media activity has been. \u00a0It is best used in conjunction\u00a0with\u00a0platforms such as Twitter (see our beginners’ guide<\/a>) and LinkedIn as these allow you to reach all of your connections in one go, though the tool does also support sharing by email. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Kudos is a\u00a0useful (and free) tool to help you frame your research to appeal to a wider audience. It allows\u00a0you to add a \u2018lay title\u2019, and encourages you to provide a non-technical description of what it\u2019s about, and why it\u2019s important.\u00a0 You can then use the inbuilt sharing options to circulate your completed publication page via Twitter, LinkedIn, email or other methods and you can measure views and changes in altmetric score, citations and downloads (via Kudos) in relation to when it was shared.<\/p>\n


\nExplain<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kudos<\/a>\u00a0allows authors to add plain language summaries explaining what the article is about and why\u00a0the research\u00a0and findings are important (see second screenshot at the bottom of this post for\u00a0author view<\/em>). Kudos’ blog post:\u00a0Explain your work \u2013 the Kudos way<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0provides tips on writing a\u00a0good plain language summary. There is also space for author perspectives and links to other resources, such as presentations, videos, interviews, news coverage, figures, data-sets or related publications.<\/p>\n

Some publishers have partnered with Kudos and will request a plain language summary at the point of submission – if your publisher is part of this you may find the ‘What’s it about’ box has already been filled in for you.<\/p>\n

\nShare<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kudos creates trackable links, so the effects of your sharing activity are measured and can be viewed\u00a0via your Author Dashboard – the 30 day view allows you to see day-by-day changes in views, downloads and Altmetric score (see top screenshot below<\/em>). This\u00a0allows you to measure how\u00a0effective the time you’ve spent sharing their research has been.<\/p>\n


\nTime-saving tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Use your ORCID ID<\/strong>\u00a0to import your publications list \u2013 there\u2019s no need to search for each publication separately.<\/li>\n
  2. If your journal gives the option,\u00a0add a plain language summary<\/strong>\u00a0when you submit\u00a0\u2013\u00a0(dependent on publisher) this should be automatically transmitted to Kudos on acceptance.<\/li>\n
  3. Take the time to connect your social media accounts<\/strong>. This\u00a0will make it much quicker for you to share your research with social media connections directly from your Kudos profile.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Our take on Kudos<\/h3>\n

    The Good<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. It’s been shown to work<\/em>:\u00a0The\u00a0Altmetrics Research Team<\/a>\u00a0at the Centre for HEalthy and Sustainable CitieS (CHESS) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore analysed data from the first two years of Kudos usage. They found that use of the Kudos toolkit by researchers led to\u00a023% higher downloads<\/a>\u00a0of full text articles from publishers\u2019 sites.\u00a0Read the PLOS One article here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n
    2. The author section is intuitive and makes sharing and monitoring your publications easy.<\/li>\n
    3. It links straight through to the Publisher site rather than hosting its own copy, preventing any chance of breaching copyright.<\/li>\n
    4. If you ‘complete’ an item via Kudos they are very good at Tweeting new papers, which will boost your efforts.<\/li>\n
    5. It’s great for\u00a0encouraging\u00a0you to write for a wider audience.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Potential challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. The search function could be improved – if you have a relatively common name searching for your articles manually can be difficult. It does, however, work well with some external systems such as ORCID which can help circumvent this issue.<\/li>\n
      2. It requires a DOI so is not as useful for (most) book chapters and other types of output.<\/li>\n
      3. Some articles (depending on Publisher) can take a while to appear in Kudos.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
