I give you the rundown below \u2013 if you would like to explore the release in full head over to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/research-impact\">their webpages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editorial edit (10\/01\/2018): Parliament have now released their <a href=\"http:\/\/researchbriefings.parliament.uk\/ResearchBriefing\/Summary\/POST-PB-0027\"><strong>&#8216;Topics of Interest&#8217; report for 2018<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: inherit;font-family: inherit;font-size: 18px\">Why might you want to engage with parliament?<\/strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To shape and change\u00a0policy and the policy agenda.<\/li>\n<li>To have demonstrable research impact.<\/li>\n<li>To raise the profile of your research and broaden\u00a0its dissemination.<\/li>\n<li>Your research\u00a0may help MPs and Members of the House of Lords to scrutinise Government policy,\u00a0debate pressing issues of the day, and\u00a0pass laws.<\/li>\n<li>To develop new research projects shaped by real-world questions.<\/li>\n<li>It may help you attract project funding \u2013 both indirectly, through raised profile and significant evidence of impact, and directly: a number of colleagues at Kent have been commissioned by government departments as project consultants.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Examples of where Kent research have successfully changed\/are having an impact on policy include Kent Law School\u2019s Dr Kirsty Horsey. Dr Horsey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/news\/index.html?view=2826\">work on Surrogacy law<\/a>\u00a0significantly contributed to a governmental remedial order announced last week; by identifying where policy is outdated or has significant gaps your research may pave the way towards change.<\/p>\n<p>Also this year, SECL\u2019s Professor Gordon Lynch has been presenting evidence as an expert witness to the on-going <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iicsa.org.uk\/\">Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse<\/a>\u00a0(IICSA) investigation of the sexual abuse of British of more than 3000 children sent overseas after the end of the Second World War \u2013 read the story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/society\/12876\/professors-expert-evidence-on-the-failings-of-child-migrant-schemes\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What sort of research is parliament interested in? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>\u2018Parliamentarians and parliamentary staff are generally interested in research that is relevant to current issues on the parliamentary agenda. In addition, MPs\u00a0are interested in\u00a0research related to\u00a0issues that affect\u00a0their constituents.<\/p>\n<p>Parliament may also be interested in research conclusions that do not\u00a0map directly onto parliamentary business or the Government&#8217;s current agenda, if the researcher\u00a0feels the findings reveal\u00a0a need for policy change or action.\u2019<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>There are a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/inquiries-a-z\/current-open-calls-for-evidence\/\">open calls for evidence<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Check the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/mps-lords-and-offices\/offices\/bicameral\/post\/work-programme\/current-work\/\">current<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/mps-lords-and-offices\/offices\/bicameral\/post\/work-programme\/planned-work\/\">planned programmes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Consult the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/whats-on\/\">calendar of\u00a0scheduled business<\/a>\u00a0in Parliament. You can sign up to receive alerts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/get-involved\/education-programmes\/universities-programme\/research-impact-at-the-uk-parliament\/current-opportunities-to-engage\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Keep an eye on petitions, PMQs and early motions (Parliament also keeps a record of everything said in parliament &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/hansard.parliament.uk\/about\">Hansard<\/a>, if you want to check whether a topic has ever been discussed).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Even if your research is not something that parliament is looking at right now, this may change \u2013 and if you think your research is something that needs to be discussed now, take it to them.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>OK, fine \u2013 how do I do this? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The LSE impact blog posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/impactofsocialsciences\/2017\/01\/16\/rubbing-shoulders-an-understanding-of-networks-relationships-and-everyday-practices-is-key-to-parliamentary-engagement\/\">useful article<\/a> in January this year titled: \u2018\u2018Rubbing shoulders\u2019: an understanding of networks, relationships and everyday practices is key to parliamentary engagement\u2019. <strong>Invite key parliament supporters of your cause along to your Workshop or event<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>send them copies of your research report<\/strong> and ask them to let you know if and how they use it. Not only are you potentially affecting policy \u2013 you\u2019re also building evidence for your REF case study, which is much easier to do as you go along than needing to ask people in 2020 what impact your 2017 report had for them.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor &amp; Francis recently released <a href=\"http:\/\/authorservices.taylorandfrancis.com\/custom\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Getting-your-research-into-parliament.pdf\">this infographic<\/a> on getting your research seen by parliament. I\u2019d say the 3 top tips are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Be relevant<\/strong>: start with a summary and focus on how your research impacts people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Follow what parliament members are doing <\/strong>via the website or individual twitter feeds \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/get-involved\/education-programmes\/universities-programme\/research-impact-at-the-uk-parliament\/current-opportunities-to-engage\/\">sign up to post alerts<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make sure the relevant people can find you <\/strong>online and at events (and invite them to your events).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Parliament have released how-to-guides on writing for parliament, including writing policy briefs and submitting evidence to parliamentary committees.
