Downloads vary between 40-60,000 (with an outlying spike of 100,000 in Feb 2018) until Feb 2019 when they increase to around 120,000\" width=\"542\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/osc\/files\/2019\/08\/KAR_Downloads_2016_2019-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/osc\/files\/2019\/08\/KAR_Downloads_2016_2019-768x419.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Downloads from the Kent Academic Repository from August 2016 to July 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We have explored various theories<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Technical improvements in discoverability and interoperability, both internal and external (e.g. unpaywall)<\/li>\n<li>Increased deposits in KAR due to changes in both external (e.g. REF) and internal (e.g. promotions) policies<\/li>\n<li>Increased use of open research as standard academic practice<\/li>\n<li>As a multidisciplinary institution, we considered whether the release of the full text from embargo would affect downloads &#8211; we have seen a steady and sustained increase in items with full text available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1152\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1152\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1152\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/osc\/files\/2019\/08\/KAR_FullTextAvailable_2016_2019-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"A graph showing the number of items with full text available from the Kent Academic Repository from August 2016 to July 2019.
