{"id":9847,"date":"2020-02-17T16:26:23","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T16:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=9847"},"modified":"2020-02-20T12:16:07","modified_gmt":"2020-02-20T12:16:07","slug":"alice-in-wonderland-project-the-nonsense-songs-quartet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2020\/02\/17\/alice-in-wonderland-project-the-nonsense-songs-quartet\/","title":{"rendered":"Alice in Wonderland project: the Nonsense Songs quartet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the build-up to this Friday&#8217;s performance of<a href=\"https:\/\/thegulbenkian.co.uk\/events\/university-of-kent-cecilian-choir-alice-in-wonderland\/\">\u00a0<strong><em>Alice in Wonderland: A Musical Dream Play<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by the University Music department, we&#8217;re pleased to present a series of films each day this week of some of the\u00a0<em>Nonsense Songs<\/em>, written by Liz Lehmann and published in 1908, that will be performed at the event.<\/p>\n<p>The suite of characterful and charming songs takes its text from the nonsense rhymes that appear in the book &#8211; including <em>How doth the little crocodile, You are old, Father William,<\/em> and <em>Will you walk a little faster &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>and creates a series of pieces for variously a quartet of voices, solos and duets. The songs will be performed live on the foyer-stage in Colyer-Fergusson by a quartet drawn from the principal cast, who will sing as part of the Hatter&#8217;s Tea Party which takes place immediately before the performance.<\/p>\n<p>The first song &#8211;\u00a0<em>How doth the little crocodile<\/em> &#8211; is here performed by <strong>Will Clothier<\/strong> (baritone), <strong>Maddie Jones<\/strong> (soprano), and two University Music Award Holders, <strong>Matthew Cooke<\/strong> (tenor) and <strong>Sophia Lyons<\/strong> (soprano). The rest of the songs will be released daily on YouTube over the course of this week, building nicely up to Friday&#8217;s performance of the Dream Play.<\/p>\n<div class=\"kent-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center;
