{"id":7498,"date":"2016-05-10T14:42:13","date_gmt":"2016-05-10T13:42:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=7498"},"modified":"2016-05-10T14:42:13","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T13:42:13","slug":"from-norway-to-alvin-lucier-music-from-minerva-voices-as-earbox-returns-to-studio-3-gallery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2016\/05\/10\/from-norway-to-alvin-lucier-music-from-minerva-voices-as-earbox-returns-to-studio-3-gallery\/","title":{"rendered":"From Norway to Alvin Lucier: music from Minerva Voices as #EarBox returns to Studio 3 Gallery"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_7500\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7500\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7500\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/05\/lucier_road_web-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"lucier_road_web\" width=\"200\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/05\/lucier_road_web-264x300.jpg 264w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/05\/lucier_road_web.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alvin Lucier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The #EarBox series in which music speaks to visual art \u2013 and vice-versa \u2013 returns next week to <strong>Studio 3 Gallery<\/strong> on <strong>Weds 18 May<\/strong> with a short musical \u2018happening,\u2019 centred on Alvin Lucier\u2019s otherworldly <em>Unamuno<\/em>, in which four semitones are articulated in a changing sequence; this focused pitch-collection, which is presented in twenty-four different patterns, creates an intense yet beautiful soundworld, which promises to be something remarkable, with singers spaced around the gallery\u2019s sonorous acoustic<\/p>\n<p>The short programme juxtaposes ancient and modern music, opening with twelfth-century plainsong and Cornysh\u2019s meditation on love and fidelity, <em>Ah Robin<\/em>, and finishing with a dramatic re-telling of the <em>Song of Roland<\/em>, an epic poem written sometime between 1040 and 1115, based on the Battle of Roncevaux in 778, featuring Cory Adams on percussion. Staying with the Norwegian theme, Lillebj\u00f8rn Nilsen\u2019s haunting, lilting contemporary piece, <em>Danse, ikke gr\u00e5te n\u00e5 (Dance, do not cry now)<\/em>, has echoes of old folk-song, with drone harmonies beneath a skirling melody.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7506\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/05\/Dungeness-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dungeness\" width=\"220\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/05\/Dungeness-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/05\/Dungeness.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>The backdrop to the event will be a new exhibition of works by Philip Hughes devoted to the strange landscape of Dungeness, including paintings, prints and photographs, as well as a special garden installation made in collaboration with the ceramist, Psiche Hughes (more details <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/studio3gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Admission to the event is free, and the performance will last twenty minutes.
