Canterbury\u2019s literary and musical festival set to blossom next week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Words, music, poetry and song will echo around the stones of the historic cathedral city next week, at the opening weekend of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisewordsfestival.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Wise Words<\/strong><\/a>, Canterbury\u2019s literary festival which blossoms anew each spring and autumn.<\/p>\n<p>The festival encourages wonder and curiosity through new encounters with literature, the written, spoken and sung word, and this year features poet and Radio 3 presenter <strong>Ian McMillan<\/strong>, Olympic Poet<strong> Lemn Sissay<\/strong>, former Canterbury Laureate <strong>Patience Agbabi<\/strong>, current Canterbury Laureate <strong>John Siddique<\/strong>, and a host of writers, poets and spoken word performers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7467\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7467\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7467\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/04\/Matt-Sharp-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew Sharp\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/04\/Matt-Sharp-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/04\/Matt-Sharp-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/04\/Matt-Sharp-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2016\/04\/Matt-Sharp.jpg 1160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7467\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matthew Sharp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The festival has a strong musical thread running throughout its nine days, which sees all manner of performers take to the stage in the yurt in Greyfriars\u2019 Garden, including cellist and baritone <strong>Matthew Sharp<\/strong>\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisewordsfestival.co.uk\/event\/matthew-sharp\/\" target=\"_blank\"> voyage from Bach to Tavener by way of Piazzolla; t<\/a>here\u2019s a return visit from rapper and musician <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisewordsfestival.co.uk\/event\/dizraeli\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dizraeli<\/a>, <\/strong><br \/>\nbluegrass with <strong>Gentlemen of Few<\/strong>, and even Your Loyal Correspondent in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisewordsfestival.co.uk\/event\/operatic-arias-songs-from-shows-michelle-harris-dan-harding\/\" target=\"_blank\">lunchtime performance on the opening day<\/a>, <strong>Saturday 30 April<\/strong>, at 12.30pm, as accompanist in a recital with mezzo-soprano <strong>Michelle Harris<\/strong>, in a programme of operatic arias and musical theatre songs ranging from Handel and Bizet to Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hammerstein.
