Using all acoustic instruments and drawing on musical styles from around the world, their repertoire included music from Latin America, Africa, Brazil and bluegrass.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The English Muse \u2013 November<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the second concert explored Baroque music from Purcell to Handel with a trio of renowned early music performers: Terence Charleston (harpsichord), Anna\u00a0Crookes (soprano) and Penelope\u00a0Spencer (violin). The programme included Purcell\u2019s <em>Sound The Trumpet<\/em> and a Handel cantata of outrageous musical inventiveness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carnival of the Animals &#8211; November<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_761\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-761\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/04\/Double.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-761 \" style=\"margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px;border: white 5px solid\" title=\"Double\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/04\/Double-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Charles Darwin\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/04\/Double-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/04\/Double-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-761\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seeing Double: Charles Darwin ?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The influence of the Darwin centenary celebrations was\u00a0apparent in the last lunchtime concert of the Autumn term, a performance of Saint-Saens\u2019 enduringly popular <em>Carnival of the Animals <\/em>by the University Camerata. Playing to a packed theatre, the ensemble featured musical staff of the University, ranging from a Deputy Vice-Chancellor to the Director of the Unit for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, as well as various visiting music teachers. The concert was a part of the University-wide Darwin celebrations, and even featured a guest appearance by Darwin himself, who bore a rather uncanny resemblence to the Drama department&#8217;s Dr. Olly Double&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><strong>KD Jazz and Dance Orchestra &#8211; January<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">The New Year kicked off in lively manner with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kdjazzband.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">KD Jazz and Dance Orchestra<\/a>,<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_739\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-739\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/04\/image.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-739 \" style=\"margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px;border: white 5px solid\" title=\"KD Jazz\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/04\/image-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"KD Jazz\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/04\/image-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2010\/04\/image-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KD Jazz &amp; Dance Orchestra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>which included several of the visiting Music Department staff. An enthusiastic audience were treated to a vivacious mixture of songs from the 1940\u2019s to combat \u2018Blue Monday\u2019s\u2019 blues. Saxophonist and singer Peter Cook didn&#8217;t allow himself to be incovenienced by a cold, as he had handily brought a megaphone for that authentic sound.
