{"id":6464,"date":"2015-03-16T10:57:02","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T09:57:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/?p=6464"},"modified":"2015-03-16T12:04:31","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T11:04:31","slug":"triumphant-verdi-requiem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/2015\/03\/16\/triumphant-verdi-requiem\/","title":{"rendered":"Triumphant Verdi Requiem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the infinite mystery of the opening bars to the dramatically hushed close, Saturday&#8217;s performance of Verdi&#8217;s <em>Requiem<\/em> by the University Chorus and Symphony Orchestra for this year&#8217;s Colyer-Fergusson Cathedral Concert was full of high drama.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6465\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6465\" style=\"width: 140px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2015\/03\/WP_20150314_09_37_00_Pro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6465\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2015\/03\/WP_20150314_09_37_00_Pro-575x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Verdi_morning_crew\" width=\"140\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2015\/03\/WP_20150314_09_37_00_Pro-575x1024.jpg 575w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2015\/03\/WP_20150314_09_37_00_Pro-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2015\/03\/WP_20150314_09_37_00_Pro.jpg 916w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 140px) 100vw, 140px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The morning shift crew<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Standing in as a last-minute replacement for the billed soprano soloist,<strong> Rachel Nicholls<\/strong> took time out from her current ENO run of <em>Die Meistersingers<\/em> to step up alongside mezzo <strong>Carolyn Dobbins<\/strong>, tenor <strong>Gerard Schneider<\/strong> and bass <strong>Simon Thorpe<\/strong>, and together all four singers delivered Verdi&#8217;s demanding solo parts with consummate skill. Under the baton of <strong>Susan Wanless<\/strong>, the Chorus and\u00a0Orchestra both\u00a0rose to the occasion superbly. It was lovely to see many alumni come back to sing in the Chorus, with the concert a major highlight of\u00a0the University&#8217;s 50th anniversary celebrations throughout this year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6467\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6467\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2015\/03\/WP_20150314_10_25_08_Pro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6467\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/music-matters\/files\/2015\/03\/WP_20150314_10_25_08_Pro-575x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Alumnus &amp; percussionist, Carina Evans and tuba-player Chris Gray<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>(Much excitement was caused by the arrival of the 66-inch bass drum from Bell Percussion, which was mobbed by many people eager to be photographed with the monster-drum, you&#8217;d have thought it was a Hollywood Celebrity&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Very many thanks to everyone involved;
